What to Look for in Wine Storage Units

You recently decided to begin storing wine in your house. Perhaps you've gone from an occasional wine drinker to a wine lover – and you now need a place to store wine bottles, so you can save them for special occasions. This is when wine storage units can come in handy.

But what exactly are wine storage units? Wine storage units' primary function is to keep wine bottles consolidated in one place, accessible, and horizontal. Why horizontal? Because that is the best way to store wine bottles. If the cork does not stay moist, it will dry out and shrink, allowing air to enter the bottle.

While most wine storage units serve the same purpose and do a fairly similar quality job of doing it, they can vary considerably in make. Some wine storage units, such as racks, are similar to shelves with slots to place the wine bottles in horizontally. These shelves are often constructed of wood or steel and are either stained or finished.

If you are planning to purchase wine storage units, you should also spend some time determining where you might place them. For instance, if you purchase some excellent wine storage units, but decide to set them up in your kitchen, you may find that the taste of the wine will seriously degrade over time. Now why is this?
The two things that affect the taste of wine the most are its exposure to light and to oxygen. The more it is exposed to either, the worse the taste will get. This is why you have to place your wine storage units in a cool, dark place. May wine connoisseurs will suggest that you place your wine storage units in a place like the basement to minimize both light exposure and exposure to high temperatures. If you have no windows in your basement, this is a bonus. If you do have windows, you may want to cover them with sheets or wood.

So if you plan to purchase those new wine storage racks, first spend some time cleaning out the basement, so you can secure a safe and stable place to put the wine racks. If you plan this out properly, you might find that the taste of your favorite glass of wine might be even better-preserved next time some special occasion calls for it.
