Wine storage cabinets are like any other cabinets, coming in many colors, shapes, and sizes. Yet their primary feature follows their functionality: providing a safe resting place for bottles of wine. Usually this entices holes or mini-tunnels which, optimally, will be horizontally-placed, thus allowing wine bottles to rest on their sides. This is an important point, particularly for those people who are extremely serious about wine collecting as often they will store certain bottles for decades (in some cases, families will keep certain bottles of fine vintage for a century or more). By resting on its side, the wine keeps the cork moist. Otherwise, if the cork dries out, it will shrink in time, allowing air into the bottle and destroying the wine.

Wine storage cabinets are typically made of wood, although through the years this has changed. Now some cabinets are constructed from Formica, metal, even sturdy forms of plastic. Everyone has their own tastes, and while wood is still the favored material, the main thing to consider when purchasing a cabinet is that the storage holes are placed either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, depending upon the use that they will have. (Even though horizontal storage is optimal for long-term storage, other storage positions can also be practical, and in some cases, as with wines capped with wax rather than cork, necessary.)
