Contained Wine Storage Units

There are two basic types of wine storage units: contained storage units and uncontained storage units. Uncontained storage units are far better known and more often used than contained wine storage units. This type of storage unit is generally referred to as a rack; and consists of multiple slots for wine storage. In contrast to this “open” system of wine storage, contained wine storage units are often more expensive, but have several features that make them more desirable.

What are some of these features? In short, there are three basic advantages that these contained wine storage units have over racks: they allow for temperature control, they prevent sunlight from entering, and they are often portable.

Let's look at the first advantage—the temperature control. This is a feature that many wine collectors don't even see as an issue. What many fail to realize is that the storage temperature and serving temperature for wine are often distinct. For instance, some wines should be served at around room temperature, but this does not mean they should be stored at the same temperature. If possible, you should store them at around 40 degree Fahrenheit, which you can accomplish with wine storage units.

Now, let's look at the second advantage—sunlight protection. Sunlight is one of the biggest perpetrators when it comes to taste destruction. If bottles are exposed to sunlight—as they often are in “open systems,” they taste will be seriously degraded over time. This, again, is where a contained storage unit will come in handy: you can completely prevent sunlight from interacting with the wine altogether, since all of the bottles will be kept in a closed box.

The last component, portability, is also crucial. If you own a beach house that you go to infrequently or if you plan to go to someone's house for a barbecue or for a celebration, you can employ your contained wine storage units. Rather than buying a bottle for the occasion, you can bring a portion of your wine rack. Since the bottles are safely stored inside of the closed unit, you wont have to worry about them banging around during the drive. Instead, you'll pop them in your trunk and arrive at location with your favorite bottles intact.

So if you're planning to purchase wine storage units in the near future, consider whether you need a contained storage unit, an uncontained storage unit, or perhaps both.
